Why Clay? Mimesis and domestic identity in creative ceramic practice

Aims and Objectives

  • To consider the role does mimesis occupies in contemporary ceramic practice and how does it can it express the multiple identites of domestic items.
  • To explore the theoretical and practical implications of mimetic ceramic application.

Outline Methodology 

  • A literature review will be undertaken to define mimesis in relation to art, locating precedents in ceramic practice.
  • Case studies of ceramicists referencing mimesis in their work will also be carried out.
  • A practical investigation mimicking objects through ceramic processes and materials will also be acheived.
  • The three activities above will lead to the creation of an informed body of artwork, articulating the nature of clay as a mimetic construct further positioned within the field of ceramic practice by a final contextual review.

  • Contextualisation of mimesis specifically related to clay.
  • Model of individual practice set in the above context that others may build upon.
  • Reading of mimesis and domestic objects articulating and expanding ceramic discourse.
