Possibilities For The Use Of Low Emissivity Glass By Surface Coating Manipulation Within A Creative Context

Aims

  • To develop new methods of creating colour by exploiting aesthetic qualities derived from low emissivity K Glass in certain conditions.
  • To produce a body of artwork demonstrating the creative potential of the techniques.

Methodology

This research has developed a technique and successfully produced creative artwork using Pilkington K low emissivity glass.  This was achieved from the perspective of an artist working in studio conditions and undertaken through a practice based methodology.  The new technique involves the manipulation of the surface coating of low emissivity glass by sandblasting and its fusion with surface manipulated traditional float glass at elevated temperatures. The procedure has been used in conjunction with APM stencil and screen printing methods in an original body of glass artwork.

Statement of Originality

Prior to this study there was no documented information regarding the creative use of functional surface coated flat glass.  The research has potential to offer new techniques and an innovative method of creating colour in glass.
