Multidimensional line drawing with glass through the development of studio lampworking and print
Aims
1. Locate elements of expressive lines found in various art mediums, chiefly Japanese calligraphy.
2. Develop and demonstrate lampworking and print techniques in order to form expressive lines of glass.
Outline methodology
1. Literature review and the survey on existing examples will provide realistic prospects and problems that will direct studio practice.
2. Application experiments will establish:
- Appropriate printing methods on borosilicate glass.
- Efficient procedures to form glass threads into a 3D sculpture.
3. Production of artworks will offer a model of creative practice that others might build upon.
Contribution to knowledge
This research will offer the first contextualisation of linear expression, particularly Japanese calligraphy, transformed into applicable forms for lampworking. The research will also locate elements of expressive lines, and develop lampworking and print techniques to achieve them in glass. The successful making procedure will be disseminated through a written theses and body of creative work
so that others might build upon.
