Postgraduate Study
PhDs with a practice-based element are a relatively new phenomenon in art and design subjects. Although known for approximately twenty years, the growth of PhDs in this area began around 1992 when polytechnics, traditionally the home of art and design, were designated as 'new universities'. This encouraged the growth of a research culture in 'practice based' art and design departments. Consequently the PhD, the standard training in research, has emerged in these subject areas.
This site is perhaps first of its kind to focus on doctoral research in creative Glass. Participants have been asked to provide details of their research and to reflect on the benefits of PhD study, both for their professional development and for their research field as a whole. The purpose of this is to start to provide models of successful PhD completions in Glass which will be of use to those engaged in or considered PhD study and their supervisors, as well as those interested in new research in Glass.
